The event wil be held at the Cup and Saucer restauraunt in the River Market. A $25 door donation gets you food, wine, live music and some end of season surprises. All this fun is also for a good cause. The MTFoundaion is inspired by the legacy of the great Marshall "Major" Taylor, one of the most popular atheltes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The MTFoundation of Kansas City seeks to educate, mentor and provide support for all youth interested in becoming involved in cycling, including racing, group rides, commuting or bicycle maintenence. RSVP at 913 248 0709. We'd love to get a fairly accurate head count by Friday November 4th. You can also find out more about the Major Taylor organization at : www.localcycling.com.

Hawk Cross Flyer

Matt Spencer, President of KU Cycling sends the info for this cool event at Clinton Lake. Matt says, "... it's going to be a lot of fun, pretty relaxed, it was a good time last year. I remember making smores over a fire watching the races." Slimenundgrossen recommends coming out race this one (then make some smores): .Hawk Cross .

Boulevard Cup Cyclocross Results

Early morning showers softened the ground but failed to turn Welborn Park into a mudfest. However, many riders commented that the Greg Rupp designed course was challenging enough with the twists and turns, offcamber sections and hilly runs. Great food and beverage (provided by the KCOI folks and Boulevard Brewery) enabled all to recover after the event.: Results .

More Welborn Cyclocross Info

From Mike Berning: "This Sunday, October 30, the teams of kcbike.com, KCOI/Boulevard Racing and SKC Racing are presenting a full day of competition and fun for the whole family. The day will start with the first ever Kansas City Cross Country Open running race, a rare opportunity to compete on a challenging all-terrain course. Beginning at noon the Boulevard Cup cyclocross races start, and these promise to be some of the most challenging and hotly contested races of the year...everyone wants one of those cool trophies. But this day is about more than racing; Welborn Park has a great playground for the kids (you gotta love those NASCAR dollars), there will be a super kids race with special kid-size barriers, plenty of hearty food courtesy of the gourmets of KCOI/Boulevard Racing and a huge raffle with schwag from Boulevard Brewing, BikeSource, Planet Sub and Indigo Wild and others. So bring the family and make a day of it. One driving note for those coming from the south; The Parallel Ave exit off of I-635 is closed, so exit I-635 at State Ave and head west to 55th Street. Take 55th Street north past Parallel and on to the Park. Hope to see you there."

Boulevard Cup Cyclocross and Run

This weekend's Boulevard/KCOI spnosored cyclocross offers up a new venue at Welborn Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The promoters assure all it will be a leg burner. Mike Berning and crew have also paired up a cross country run for those who prefer to stay on their feet the whole time: KCCC Open .

Women's Team

From Chad Marshall: "In KCBike.com, Inc.'s continuing efforts to increase competition in women's cycling, SKC Racing will work to build a women's team in 2006 which compliments (and competes with) KCOI Boulevard's women's team. SKC Racing is currently looking for an individual to head up the SKC women's team effort. The main objectives for the SKC women in 2006 are growth and racer participation. The ideal qualities we are looking for in a candidate include: Ability to lead and inspire, ability to attract new women riders to the sport, experience in bike racing, time and energy to put forth toward the team, initiative to make things happen, positive attitude. The women's leader will not need to worry about managing race promotion, sponsorship, or clothing as that is already taken care of by other members of the organization. If interested, please contact SKC Racing president Chad Marshall at 816-309-8206 or chadmarshall@sprintpcs.com."

Weekend Cyclocross Update

Race number 2 of the Boss Cross Series was held at the hilly Pearson Park venue (site of the last several Kansas Cyclocross Championships). It was also the first cold weather event of the season: .Boss Cross Results. Meanwhile, a fair number of locals raced in Omaha at the 3rd and 4th rounds of the Mid America Cup. Chris Locke reports that Catherine Walberg, Steve Songer, Tom Price and Steve Tilford won their respective categories both days. Dean Parker captured the Single Speed win on Saturday and Chris Locke won the no shifter division on Sunday.

News Shorts 2005/10/20

This Sunday's local cyclocross event is at Pierson Park (please note the venue swap on the Boss Cross Flyer.

Registration is up and running for the Kansas and Missouri Cyclocross Championships. Remember this event is preregistration only: Championships. The same weekend features a UCI event, here's some fresh news from Bill Marshall: "As most of you know KLM is hosting a UCI Cyclocross race on December 3rd in conjunction with the Missouri and Kansas Cyclocross Championships. We are wanting to offer host housing for as many athletes as possible. We will have a host hotel but, not every rider can afford a hotel. We will be inviting some of the Nations Top Pro’s and Amateurs. We are asking you and your respective team members to offer up a place to stay for these athletes. What does it entail? Simple hospitality, food and beverage etc… This would be a nice gesture from the Kansas City cycling scene and will make a positive impression on out of state racers. I will be posting host housing information on www.kccrossnationals.com within the week. So, please let me know if you or any of your teammates would like to offer athletes a weekend home on December 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I know there are a lot of single cyclist that would be good candidates for this. Thanks."

The KLM folks are still needing a few of you Maxxis winner to contact them regarding payout: To collect prizes each Maxxis winner must e-mail their mailing address to info@klmmarketingsolutions.com Once received checks will be mailed.

Zeke Update

"Thank you all so much for your support, concern and caring for a fallen rider. As many of you know, Zeke Sheppard was struck in the head by a car while riding toward home on September 3 of this year. He sustained serious head trauma including swelling of his brain and inner-cranial bleeding. He was unable to breath unassisted and was hooked up to a respirator in the Intensive Care Unit for a week.

Health
The good news is that Zeke has been released from the hospital and is going through an extensive rehab program at home. According to his doctors, his recovery has been significantly better than anyone would have expected given the extent of his injuries.

The bad news is that the impact of the car hitting his head severed his right optic nerve. He will be blind in his right eye for the rest of his life.

Although this is a hard pill to swallow, especially for a cyclist, Zeke is asking for no pity. In fact, he’s taking this far better than his friends because in his own words, “Blind is better than dead”.

He has two more surgeries in his future to correct his wandering right eye. The first one will happen in 2006 and the second will be some time after that based on the outcome of the first. These surgeries will not allow him to see but will reattach ocular muscles that were also severed in the accident.

Fund Raising
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of the cycling community, we’ve raised enough money to cover Zeke’s medical expenses, including the two foreseeable eye surgeries. I cannot begin to thank every person and company that came together to help Zeke. The compassion and giving from both individuals and companies to help a fallen rider clearly emphasizes that the cycling community is different from any other group with whom I’ve ever been associated.

To date we’ve all helped raise a little over $15,000.00 to help Zeke offset his medical and rehabilitation costs. This will cover his out of pocket insurance expenses for 2005, 2006 and cover his second eye surgery after 2006. Thank you all so much for helping Zeke. He is grateful to everyone who came together to help him. His family is amazed at the closed knit sense of family that we all associate with the cycling community.

I’m proud to call myself a cyclist. We’ve all helped a very deserving cyclist get back in his feet to ride another day.

Thank you,

Ken Miner"

Boss Cross One Results

Even with last minute venue change, Jeremy Haynes was able to put together an outstanding course utilizing a variety of challenging park features. Sand pit, stairs, double boards, and a grunting 'ride up' kept heart rates high. Come back performance of the day belonged to Tony Wilhelm who broke a chain as the gun went off. Tony was given a fresh bike, but still started well behind the A field. By the end of the race he'd moved into 5th. .Boss Cross Results.

Cyclocross Wednesday Night

The hardy folks that like to run with perfectly good bicycles will meet at the Trek Bicycle Store of Kansas City on Wednesday evenings for continued studies in the fine art of cyclocross. Be there at 6:00 p.m. ready to leave the parking lot at 6:15. Expect to explore nearby pocket parks and backyards for about an hour of threshold level fun. It would be wise to have at least a clip red flashing light this week.

Octoginta Time Trial

Curtis Martell sends the flyer for this fine end of road season time trial. A great tuneup to get ready for the steady pain of cyclocross or a final pump of the legs before cold weather. A nice flat course and always good organization makes this a fun (OK, maybe not fun...until it's over)10 kilometer Time Trial. Oh yeah, Curtis encourages preregistration, read the details on the flyer.

Rapture and Raffle

The Heartland Race folks send this updated press on the RIM mountain bike race this weekend. And this from Todd Posson:

"Custom Frame Raffle to benefit Zeke

Rob at Badger Cycles (www.badgercycles.com) has decided to raffle off a custom fillet brazed frame, with all of the proceeds going toward Zeke. Raffle tickets are $5 for one, $20 for 5. You can get a mountain bike, road bike, cross bike, 26", 29", whatever you want. Rob will custom size it to fit you. Paint will be single color. Normal price for Rob's frames is $1250, so this is a pretty good deal for a chance to win a custom frame, and it's an easy way to help a fellow cyclist out. Zeke's a great guy, and it sucks to see him down. He drove me to the hospital this spring when I broke my collarbone, so I feel a little extra duty to him.

Check out the Badger website if you want details about Rob's work. I'm handling the raffle for Rob, so I've set up a Paypal an account just for Zeke, using my email address: tposson@tb-engr.com"

Zeke Shepherd was recently injured and suffered some pretty serious injuries.-ed.

Doin' Time In Leavenworth

The Sante Fe Trail Bicycyle and Coffee folks put on a fine criterium last weekend. Results from the fine KCA scoring system: DT.

Check out the race flyers page for lots of fresh flyers. Lanterne Rouge, Boss Cross, Boulevard Cup, CrossLogic, Midwest Cross Cup, Missouri and Kansas State Championships and a local UCI race are all on the cyclocross calendar. Rumor has the State and UCI events at a dynamite new venue with the full Belgian production of beer and trombones. For those of you who can't get enough of multisport, Chris Locke offers the Midwest Challenge events that include kid specific races. Get the tykes out of the house and on their bikes. And for you folks who prefer to leave the bikes behind, there's even a cross country run in conjunction with the Boulvevard Cup on October 30th.

Womens' Cross Clinic Draws Crowd

by Teresa Jarzemkoski

21 women attended the KCOI / Boulevard sponsored inaugural Womens' Only Cyclocross Clinic on Saturday, September 17th. Many of them were first time racers intrigued by descriptions of cyclocross. Stacey, Manager at the Trek Bicycle Store of Kansas City provided detail on bike fit and set up for 'cross racing, a few bottle cages were removed, and the drills began. The women learned tips and techniques for getting off their bikes while the bikes were still moving. They practiced some, they laughed, they practiced some more.

Then they learned to jump back on the bike, sliding over the saddle and finding the pedals. They practiced again. Running a few steps and then leaping onto bikes in long lines. This part was a little harder...but there was still some good natured laughter.

Moments later the women had perfectly good bikes perched upon their shoulders as they ran over a set of two barriers specially designed for those new to 'cross. A couple of runs through a series of tight turns formed by cones and they were ready to put the whole set of new skills together in a 15 minute session of "at your own pace" training on a mini cross course complete with off camber hills, twists and turns, a set of barriers and a little bit of pavement.

Thanks to the generosity of Boulevard Brewery's support for Womens Racing, participants received coupons for free entry to two upcoming races, the Lanterne Rouge race in Leavenworth on October 9th, and the Boulevard Cup race on October 30th. Additional thanks go to the Trek Bicycle Store of Kansas City, Kansas City Orthopedic Institute, The City of Merriam, the KCOI/Boulevard Racing team and the Slimen Und Grossen news team.

Ladies - Hope to see you at the races!

Zeke Ride Fun/ Raiser Successful

From Ken Miner,

"All,

Thank you so much for coming out and supporting a fallen cyclist.
I'm not very good at creative writing, so I can't begin to describe
the emotions I felt in seeing so many people come together to help
Zeke with his medical bills.

Together, we raised around $4,000 tonight that will go directly to
help Zeke.

A very special thanks to

- 75th Street Brewery for donating food and beer profits.
- BikeSource for donating bikes and bike products.
- The Trek Store of Kansas City for donating bikes and bike products.
- Dirt Rag Magazine for donating products and a lifetime subscription.
- Rhino Records from Minneapolis for donating to Carol Hatcher's
music collection (Carol won a couple of really cool box music sets)
- www.biketiresdirect.com for donating some sweet road, cross and
mountain bike tires.
- Dale Maxfield and the Silver Hammers for providing the music.

A very special thanks to all of you for coming out and helping us
help Zeke.

The next fundraising event will be the Rapture in Misery 6/12 hour
race at Landahl Park in Blue Springs on September 24th.
www.heartlandrace.com is donating 100% of the race proceeds to the
Zeke Fund. Anyone who bought in to the raffle tongiht will
automatically be entered in the raffle at the race. Even if you're
not a mountain biker, come on out and hang out. Drink some beer, eat
some food and listen to some great music. The Down Trunks are
donating their music to help Zeke. There will be a bunch of bikes
and frame/fork combos raffled off. Tons of stuff given away. There
is a Zeke swap meet/silent auction as well. I'll manage that but the
basics are: Bring your stuff, tell me what reserve you want on it
and we'll open up the bidding. Any money received will go to Zeke's
medical bills.

If nothing else, it will be a great party. Bring your camping stuff
if you like and spend the night with us under the stars.

Again, thank you so much for coming out and supporting a fallen cyclist.

Ken"

Merlyn and wheels will be appearing at the Gateway Cup in St. Louis this weekend.

Tour of Kansas City Day Two

The 43rd Tour of Kansas City ended with dry pavement on a fast criterium course in downtown Overland Park. Slightly larger fields than previous years and a healthy increase in spectators on both days had organizers and athletes smiling. Weddings and kid's races kept the the event festive. The "Headstrong for Jake" folks were present to encourage safe riding and helmet use for youngsters. Mainstream news coverage on three local televison stations as well as the Kansas City Star reinforced that interest in cycling by the general public is on the rise. KC Training Series Updates

From Chris Hess:

"ITEM: Following his 12th (!) win at the Tuesday Night
worlds, Local Criterium Czar Shadd Smith was observed
to say "it's getting harder!" Hmmm, could be bad
timing for the ever-affable Smith. Several local
riders have been seen with with three former Russian
cosmonauts who have been providing "supplements"
reported to make 'roids look like pop tarts!
Cosmonaut #1 was heard to say, "look, we went to the
moon on this stuff, what do you think it will do for a
guy to compete against what's his name?" With the
season going into the final weeks, the Criterium Czar
crown could be up for grabs...

ITEM: Make plans now for the best Tour of KC to date!
Besides hill repeats to prepare for the "umphf!" of
Cliff Drive, you'll want to make plans to see the
wedding of Defined Fitness Training co-owner Megan
Hottman and Rob Helton. This will occur just prior to
the Pro, 1/2 race so you'll want to get your kitchen
pass now to spend the afternoon at the course and see
this once in a lifetime event.

ITEM: Don't throw away those hammer gel flasks! Just
discovered while preparing for a road trip...these
flasks double as great shampoo carriers!!
Wow...multi-purpose item :-) "

C racers were up next with a 7 lap points race followed by the A’s with an 18 lap points race. The second round introduced B and C classes to a “win and out“ points race of attrition (first across the line, collects some points, and get to watch the rest of the race until specified laps have been completed, or no riders are left). The A’s did a fast 6 lap scratch race. Final set of races included another Scratch race for the B and C’s with the A’s doing a win an out. Results. "

Kansas Crit/Road Championship Registration

Bill Marshall of KLM sends this note:

"With the Kansas Cycling Championship fast approaching riders are starting to register for the event as well as raise some questions. There have been some concerns expressed about being able to only register on-line. This is not the case; any rider may use a Standard Athlete Release Form as their registration form and manually mail it in to KLM Marketing Solutions, 7400 Beverly, Overland Park, KS 66204. This form can be found at www.usacycling.org It is has been brought to the attention of KLM that some athletes are not satisfied with pre-registration only? This should not be a concern of any athlete wanting to compete for a State Champion Jersey. The Kansas Cycling Championships Dates have been posted on all area calendars since January of 2005 and on-line registration has been up and running the same amount of time. This has given every cyclist over 5 months to plan and register for this event. The goal of any championship event is to have a championship feel, image and very difficult courses. Therefore, this is part of being a championship event. All Triathlons, most NRC Races and now local grassroots races are pre-registration only. We will not accept day of registrations for this event but, we will be hosting a “late” registration at the Trek Store of Kansas City on Friday, June 17th 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. allowing any last minute athletes a chance to register. Thank you for your time and see you at the Championships."

Racing Growth

196 riders registered at last week's opening Spring Fling criterium in Lawrence. This after a banner year for cyclocross and a steady increase in other road events since the turn of the century (that's 2000 folks). The Slimenundgrossen news site has covered local bicycle racing for the past five years and has archived most of the area events. Our news team attributes these increases to a number of factors: Better organization and distribution of event flyers by promoters, National Championship events held in the metro, training race opportunties, and the "Lance" effect are some. Pete Greig's Tour of Kansas City, which by the mid 1980's was reduced to a parking lot crit, again draws elite (and not so elite riders) from across the country. Jim Whittaker has hit the 10 year mark with Spring Fling and Bill Marshall has added more USCF National Championships and UCI events to the local calendar. Missouri and Kansas have associations to govern USAC events. Within that framework there is still a lot of potential for additional growth. Area mountain bike racing is healthy, with promoters like the Heartland team, Chris Locke, Midwest Fat Tire and others continuing to bring in new riders. NORBA has a regional rep, Chris Hess, in our home turf. The nearby scene in Nebraska is strong in all disciplines. Cyclocross has cross-pollinated with mountain biking successfully, with new riders using 'cross as a stepping stone to road events. Lastly, non USAC racing is abundant, Kansas City's Corporate Challenge time trial draws over 700 competitors. Triathlons and Duathlons (both events requiring a bike) are again on the rise. Mix in some nice weather and OLN coverage and turnouts this spring could be even bigger.

Pure Sweet Hell

Roses and mud. Even though it was Valentine's Day, couples and singles mingled before the showing of a hip cyclocross documentary film at the Glenwood Theatre. Chris Locke and the Cowtown folks helped filmaker Brian Vernor secure the venue, with proceeds going to the Cowtown juniors. Shot with a grainy twist and some innovative camera angles, backed by some nice original music and filled with provacative narration, the showing was well received. Some very cool vintage footage was sprinkled throughout the movie. Several delighted enthusiasts noted a very "old school" shot of Steve Tilford sporting a plastic track helmet and Raleigh jersey. Brian stuck around post showing and talked local scene with Teresa Jarzemkoski, Bill Marshall, Dean Parker, Shadd Smith and Mark Thomas, who had all delighted in the muddy images of the last several very wet National Championships. For more info on this fine work check out: Cyclocrossfilm. A return engagement was discussed, hopefully in the near future.

More Championship Racing

From www.cyclingnews.com: "The University of Kansas and KLM Marketing Solutions will host the US Collegiate Road National Championships for the next three years, USA Cycling announced today. The event was originally intended for New Haven, Connecticut, but when the promoter ran into some unforeseen issues, the '05 Nationals were left without a host. The KU Cycling Club and KLM Marketing Solutions stepped in and despite having only five months to plan, the preparations are well under way.
Competition will consist of a road race, criterium, and team time trial offering challenges to riders of all calibres. The road course is a 23 mile loop around Lake Perry. "It's a very hilly and challenging course," said KLM Marketing Solutions President Bill Marshall. "Anyone who says Kansas is flat has only driven their car there - not ridden a bike."
Registration information and other details for the 2005 event, scheduled for May 13-15, will soon be available at www.usacycling.org and at www.klmmarketingsolutions.com. "

UCI Racing Returns to Metro

Bill Marshall sends this: "I am pleased to announce that KLM Marketing Solutions will be the host of a UCI Cyclocross Race to be held December 3rd, 2005. As some of you may recall I was approached by UCI and USA Cycling to get this event on the calendar. I have been working with Chris Locke to nail down some of the details. The weekend schedule is still tentative at this point, but it will basically be as follows. On Saturday we will host the UCI event featuring Elite Men, Elite Women and Junior Categories. Sunday, December 4th, 2005 will be the Kansas Cyclocross Championships. This will be a great warm-up for some and a great opportunity for others to view Cyclocross racing at its best." Overland Park, Kansas was the site of the last local UCI calnedar cyclocross events in 2000.

Mud and Beer

The Slimenundgrossen news team held a "tune-up" training race and party on Sunday January 2. While not everyone who attended elected to sample the two dismounts per lap 30 minute race, few turned down the post ride Belgian style beer. "Results"

Maxxis Payout Update 1/4

The KLM Marketing folks wanted to pass on that prize money from last years Maxxis series for Wichita folks is available by contacting KCA president Curt Shelman (see the link to the KCA for e-mail info). Other individuals in the metro area should be receiving checks by mail this week. Bill Marshall notes that next years series will end with a ceremony and payout at the final event and apologizes for any inconvenience.
