Froze Toes

Appropriate name for an early season race. Still, it's popular for those with cabin fever looking for a first test of the season. A short drive east on I-70 if you're ready this weekend. Scroll down for other Spring flyers. Click this link for information on the Columbia Bicycle Race Team and "Froze Toes"

Chris Cross Cyclocross Results

Gerard, J.C (Sepusa), and the Lawrence crew put together the first cold weather 'cross race of the Fall 2001 season. A cookout, a course with significant pavement, and kids races kept everyone's mind off the chill. The next opportunity for frigid suffering comes on Jan 5th at Rick Finley's new race. Scroll down for the flyer. Here's a report and the Results.

KCBC Training Ride Time Change

The Saturday training ride from Shawnee Mission Park starts at 10 a.m. beginning December 8th. An excellent opportunity for several hours of quality spinning.

Chris Cross and State Champs

This weekend's cyclocross event in Lawrence will use the now familiar A,B, and C categories. Simply put Pro, 1,2 or Experts can't race B or C. Cat 3's or Sport can't race C. Gerard also has age group divisions. The expected breakdown will be 40+ and 50+ for Masters and Juniors. The 11 a.m. C race is focused on beginners. No sandbagging please. The Missouri State champs were recently held with a few folks from the Metro attending. Jean and Andy Lucas as well as expatriate Suzanne Johnson raced. It is expected that the KS State Championship will be held in Topeka after the new year, but no confirmation yet. Here's the link to St. Louis/State Champ results: click here.

Cyclocross Nationals Tune Up/History Lesson (Updated)

This weekend offers the last local race before the USCF Cyclocross National Championship in Baltimore. Expect those trying to peak for the big one to attend as well as those trying to continue form into the January races. The most recent issue of Velonews chronicles the history of East Coast 'Cross. A previous issue dealt with the West. We in the Metro area have a colorful cyclocross past also. The Slimen news team has tracked local events beginning in the late 1970's. Cyclocross hosted by the Mt. Oread club of Lawrence seems to have continued until about 1983. Sam Perkins points out that these classy events were organized by Gene Wee. Sam also traveled to events in Wichita. John Pahlmann filled in with a series during the early 90's, followed by some BRBC events and the early Slimen Und Grossen races (props to Curt Bales). Mike Hudson and Curtis Martell kept the flames alive in the same period for Topeka and Lawrence. All the while Steve Tilford (and others?) were plugging along collecting podium spots at national events. If you have a contribution to this timeline, please send it to slimenundgrossen@aol.com

New Cyclocross Venues

Three more races are firmly on the local 'cross schedule (with a fourth likely). The Slimen news team had a chance to preview the upcoming "Chris Cross" course at Clinton Lake. Gerard has selected a very fair amount of pavement, using large chunks of the 'Spring Fling' criterium roadway. Expect the runs to be long and rugged but flat. Transition sections will have plenty of smooth grass and some interesting berms. This ain't no mountain bike course. Near the halfway point of each lap it seems there will be a set of triple barriers that may rival the Chicago Supercup "6 pack". Rick Finley has property permission for his Jan 5th race in Shawnee. Jeremy Haynes will complete that weekend with a Jan 6th race at Rockhurst. Scroll down for the December flyer. Watch this page for the January info.

More Winter Training Tales

The Slimen news team put some long slow miles in over the holiday weekend. The Sunday "Maxine's Ride", a weekly event for over 10 years, had a good crew of racer types. After a hearty breakfast at the traditional 31st and Benton stop, the fortified peloton headed East for a 4 hour spin. On the road the group hooked up with Rick Denicky (ABC-Tonnissteiner) recently back from Europe. Rick was in the KC area for Jim Coker's wedding. The rumor mill has a local Collegiate national champ likely riding in Belgium for the above team.

Winter Riding

What are area racers doing in the cold and dark months? Pete Greig and the KCBC folks keep the Saturday training ride flying year round. Go to www.kcbcracing for information. The evening JCBC and KCBC rides are popular ways to beat winter cabin fever. Monday nights from Jerry's Bait Shop in Lenexa brings a mix of racers and non. This ride often has a theme. Monday the 12th was the "Dylan Thomas Ride". Alcohol and poetry were both involved on the sojurn which included a stop at Re:Verse on the Plaza. Don't put the bike away yet!

Chicago Supercup Cyclocross

A quick glance at the Elite field results show Steve Tilford 10th, Jed Schneider 17th and Bill Stolte 29th. As usual this race had many of the top competitors from across the US. The field was split however with another major east coast race.

Leavenworth Cyclocross News (Updated)

No slogging through hub deep mud for local cyclocross yet. Another very warm day characterized the 5th event on the area circuit. The big boys (and girls) from Topeka came out to play. Steve Tilford led an entourage to tune up for the Chicago Supercup. The Slimen preview of the Haven's Park venue did not do justice to the difficulty. Many racers voiced that the grassy barrier strewn climbs made this the most challenging race of the season. Lyle Reynolds captured some of the action at http://photos.yahoo.com/lyreinkc In other 'cross news, conversations with two area promoters indicate the following dates should have 'cross races: Dec 9, Jan 5, Jan 6, and Jan 13. This clump of races will likely require mud and snow skills.Leavenworth Results.

CrossLogic Cyclocross Results

A warm Sunday for November showed lots of short sleeves on competitiors. Race director Chris Locke orchestrated a fine race AND post event party. Features such as a wide pavement straightaway with a roundabout, a 10 meter sand pit that most elected to run, two sets of triples, and lots of free beer and food made this a memorable event. Mr. Locke also reminded the newsteam to mention the boat ramp to run-up transition. This natural obstacle taxed most everyone's technical skills and proved that English Landing Park is not flat. CrossLogic, Bicycle Adventure, KCBC racing, Boulevard Brew, Budweiser and many local Parkville businesses are the responsible folks. Here's the Results.

Collegiate Mtn Bike Champs

A number of KU Cycling Team athletes travelled to New York last week for the big NCCA event. Jed Schneider was the top local finisher with a 3rd in short track and a 4th in the XC. Jen Tilley took 10th in the Women's short track. Also noted in the results were Matthew Gilhousen, Justin Haack, and Piers Sharrock.

Mountain Bike Racing

The Heartland Race promotion folks have released a schedule for 2002 Offroad events, including another epic12/24 Hour race. Scott Capstack of Heartland and other race promoters are in the early planning stages of an inclusive planning/scheduling meeting for metro racing. Here's the 2002 schedule: March 24, April 28, May 19, June 16, July 21 and Sept 21/22. SEPUSA hosted a well attended race on Oct 28, with an appropriate Halloween themed name: Race With the Devil Results.

Penn Valley Cyclocross UPDATED

The final race of the "Boss Cross Series" took place under warm and windy conditions. Dry ground made for some rough going and hairy corners on the technical course. Spectators were treated to excellent views with thrilling action (and some spills). Race promoter Jeremy Haynes of Midwest Cyclery handed out overall series awards, cyclocross specific medals to podium placers for each event, and some first class swag from the raffle. The most talked about item of the day was the FLUSHABLE portable toilet. Prior to racing, a Henry Meyer tribute ride and bike expo was held. Lyle Reynolds has taken some fine shots of this race and Penguin park at this location http://photos.yahoo.com/lyreinkc You may have to log on with a Yahoo password to see the pics. We will try to post some on the Slimen pages. Here's the Results.

Penguin Park Cyclocross

Under the shadows of giant Penguins and Kangaroos, the second event of the "Boss Cross" series was contested. The North of the river venue drew a quality field, including Juniors. Jed Schneider, 2000 Collegiate 'Cross Champion, demonstrated techniques for the novice and experienced in a fine pre-race clinic. Jed continued the schooling as he spanked the field in the main event. There were thrills and spills, with Bruce Tanner taking a hard tumble and sustaining a shoulder injury on a transition from grass to pavement. Racing continues next week at Penn Valley Park. Scroll down for information about the Henry Meyer events preceeding the race. Here's the Results.

Cyclocross Season Opener

Spring Valley Park, in the heart of urban Kansas City, was the site of furious racing October 14th. The first of Jeremy Haynes three race series was held on a challenging bowl shaped course. Very tough runups alternating with a wide uphill road section required the full range of 'cross skills. The scenic park was very spectator friendly, with neighbors joining the usual fans. A generous raffle, cool medals, and a party atmosphere made for a great kick off. The Slimen news team deemed Lynn Neir's race the outstanding performance of the day. Lynn raced a road bike with 39x23 low gear and knobbies with minimum clearance. Mr. Neir did have offroad shoes and pedals in his first observed cyclocross event. Racing continues next week at "Penguin Park". Here's the Results.

Octoginta Time Trial

Thom Leonard, KU Cycling, KCBC, MCT and the fine folks in Lawrence provided the last time trial of the season. A board flat course and some groovy categories made this a 'must do' chrono event. Here's the TT Results.
