ARCHIVES New Blood (8/03) This was sent to the newsdesk from Jim Whittaker: "I wanted to share a newspaper article that appeared in this Sunday's Lawrence-Journal World. It really surprised me that it it took up one full page of the paper and part of the front sports page. It covers the free kid's race at the Cycle Works Twilight bike race." Slimen mini-editorial: This is a great program. Jim's contribution will have some long term benefit for all. "Journal World Article" Get Physical The Slimen news team recently spent some cruel time at the Kansas University Exercise Physiology Laboratory. This facility offers a variety of valuable assesment tests. If you are a Joe Friel believer, they can get you the numbers you need to plan your program. Some of the items on their menu are Lactate/Anaerobic Threshold, Body Composition, Aerobic Power, and Wingate Tests. In addition they MAY be looking for some volunteers to participate in some studies (and you get the benefit of some freebie testing). For information call (785) 864-0773. Out of Towners Superweek finished up with some local involvement. Kelly Benjamin (BRBC) got to stand on top of the podium at the final criterium. Antonio Padilla (BRBC) took second in one of the several road races, in addition to several fine crit finishes. Ann Woodward (Trek-VW) made the results more than once. Brian Jensen (BRBC) was looking forward to a full plate of events, but an early event crash, instigated by an aggressive riding Roberto Gaggioli, put Brian on the sidelines. Mr. Jensen will be off to Europe for a bit now that he's recoved. Todd Cambell (BRBC) contested the first two events of the USCF Espoirs Nationals in South Carolina. Megan Long, Oklahoma hot rod, and occasional area racer, made the podium at Jr. Natz in both the TT and the RR. August KCBC Time Trial (8/01) This reporter is very aware that there is only a limited elevation change at the Gardner Airport Time Trial course. However, after making the turnaround at halfway, the speedbump high hill feels gigantic. Add in a stiff headwind and it's business as usual for the chrono heads. The KCBC Racing Team hosts training time trials, criteriums, and the upcoming super fine Tour of Kansas City (See the flyer page). These folks are the deal! "Results" Tour de France Feminim Winner Born (7/24/02) Jeremy Haynes (urban cyclocross promoter) and wife Sarah announce the birth of daughter, Rose Marie. Rose is focusing on the 2023 event. No word whether she came with ink. Heartland Mountain Bike (7/24/02) Sunday July 21st was the wrap up for the Heartland Mountain Bike Series. This fine event had 200 participants flailing the trails (at least there was some shade). Next thing on these folks plate is the Rapture In Misery 12/24 Event. Go here for results and details: "Series Results" USCF Kansas Road Omnium (7/22/02) Peter Greig, head honcho of KCBC, fostered and compiled this competition. Points were awarded for finishes at the Kansas USCF Championship Individual Time Trial, Road Race and Criterium. This 'best all round' rider format increased participation and allows some pretty fun comparisons. Slimen mini-editorial: "The degree of difficulty was such that only 20 riders were able to finish all three events. (Difficulty, of course, also includes travel distance, job duties, kids, heat etc.). Hats off to the promoters, workers, officials and riders that made this happen!" Championship jerseys for category winners will be availble soon. Stay tuned here for details: "Omnium Results" USCF Kansas State Criterium (7/22/02) Mike Schmidt, Adam Gatewood, Mike Hudson and the crews from Topeka and HRRC managed in fine style the hottest race of recent years. Temperatures near 100 degrees plus a slightly technical crit course made things risky. Outstanding volunteers and an air conditioned registration facility kept things safe. The host venue, Washburn University in Topeka had ample parking, warmup areas and bathrooms. Watch this space for the final rankings of the Omnium comopetition. Here's the complete results: "Criterium Championship" Hands On Junior Development Coach Jim Whittaker has made some significant contributions to the local cycling scene. Jim sent this note detailing how other cyclists can help grow a part of our sport: "Contribute" July KCBC Time Trial (7/11) Conditions at Gardner airport gave a slight push on the return trip during the monthly race of truth. Racers were using this as a tune up for TTT and 20K events this weekend. "Results" News Shorts (Upated 7/9/02) Jim Whittaker has packed his Alta-Vista site with results and pics from his Summer Sizzler Series, including the July 4th events. The Tour of Kansas City official flyer is now available. Expect another first class event. Ebby Norman, longtime racer, has opened a bike shop in Sedalia, Mo. Part of the Slimen news team put some time in on nearby roads. ProVelo sits next to the Katy Trail access for those planning a more relaxing weekend. Eb has a website at www.pro-velo.com Society News(7/9/02) Tom Blauvelt (MCT) and Theresa Thornton (MCT)would be likely candidates for the upcoming Team Time Trial in the "mixed" category. However, they are unlikely to attend since they are vacationing on their honeymoon. No word whether bikes were packed. Swedish Champ Former Lawrence Kansas resident Natalie Visser, won the Swedish National Elite Women's Championship Road Race. Natalie returned to Sweden last year after finding plenty of local success. Full results are at www.cyclingnews.com Scroll down the 'Major Races' on the left sidebar. Best All Round Riders Pete Greig worked out the spreadsheet with current standings in the Kansas Road Omnium competitition. Points are earned in the USCF Championship Time Trial, Road Race, and Criterium. The winners of each category will earn a dandy trophy, and be eligible to purchase a distinctive championship jersey. Todd heads to the National Team Camp in New York in July. This camp will select a team to represent the U.S. in Bermuda for a September stage race. John Hackman of Museum Cycling Team has an invitation to race in Germany this August. Slimen mini-editorial: Both of these young men deserve support and encouragement. Kansas State Road Race Results (Revised 6/27) What should a State Championship Road Race be like? The answer in Kansas is hot, hard, and well attended. An additional feature was the outstanding work by the hosting club and director. Props to Bob Brust, RCRC, and all the fine help. Here's the link to complete results. See the flyer page for the Kansas State Criterium Championship, the last event of the omnium series."Results" Upcoming Events Update 6/21 Tom Logan This from Juli Watkins: Tour de Lakes - A Memorial Ride for Tom Logan Saturday, June 29th. 7 a.m. start at Longview Recreation Center. Two courses to choose from: 26.5 miles or 61 miles
$20 fee includes a commemorative T-shirt and a contribution to Legacy
Soccer Park in honor of Tom Logan, a local runner and cyclist who died
when his heart stopped during a training ride last summer. Come out and
use the event as a training ride to commemorate Tom, ride the route he
loved and to meet fellow cyclists.
To help explain the essence of Tom Logan, close friend and training
partner Shari Woiwood shares the following:
"Tom Logan was first a great runner. I have known Tom for a long time
but we started biking together on the Tuesday night rides here in Lee's
Summit four year ago. I would always bike the 20 mile route as fast as
could, throwing caution to the wind. Tom took me in under his wing and gave
me some sound biking advice on how to draft, pointing out holes in the road,
dressing like a biker and respecting bikers that had biked for years, and
being a safer biker all round. He and I did a few interval work outs on the
bikes and we did all my long rides, training for my Ironman. He worked from
his home as a Nike representative so he could get away to bike during the
day. He was a wonderful friend, father, husband, coach, and athlete. He
was really into coaching soccer especially when his three boys were growing
up. He was like a big brother to me and one that taught me patience in the
world of biking and athletics. He is still greatly missed. On a training
ride back just last May he told me someday he wanted to put together a bike ride going around the lakes out here in Jackson County. I am bring Tom's
ride to life and I hope many will join me on this day and make it a day Tom would have really savored." Tour De Tongie Two stages closer to Topeka, but a finishing crit in Tonganoxie, this new stage race wrapped up on Sunday. Here's a link to the results in a spreadsheet form. You'll need to scroll a bit for all the categories. "Results" Across The Water Former Kansan Jed Schneider sends us this report on daily life as a proletarian bike racer in Belgium: "Euro News" Lawrence River Trail Here's the latest report from the local mountain bike speedway. Check the flyers page or scroll down for more offroad info. "Results" Kansas State Individual Time Trial Over 50 riders contested this 40km event at St. Mary's. While the course has little elevation change, there was a serious headwind for the first 20km. Mike Hudson and company with some input from Pete Greig increased the field sizes of this quality event. This race is part of an omnium championship for Kansas riders. Roger Harrison has provided some pics in the photo album at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/karb/ Click here for the "Times" Or for a quick look at the medal winners: "Champs" Missouri State Championship News The fine Stlbiking.com page has the results from the MO road race on June 2nd. Note local Phil Gronniger of KCBC, impressive as always. Just in to the news desk 6/9, Todd Campbell of BRBC won the Espoir category at the Missouri State Time Trial. Road race posted, watch for the TT stuff: "St. Louis News" June KCBC Time Trial Both Kansas and Missouri will hold USCF State Championship Time Trials on Sunday June 9th (See the flyer page). Racers from both districts used the Gardner airport event for a final bike and motor check. Several personal bests were set despite some steady wind on the return trip. "Results" Largest Local Bike Race June 1st was the date for some pretty incredible numbers. 736 cyclists competed in a 2.1 mile time trial. 38% of the racers were women (283). Stephen Rouff turned the fastest time overall, 4:12. Fastest woman was Stacy Lamer with 5:02. A quick glance through the results shows plenty of familiar names to the USCF and NORBA community. Racers were broken into 5 year age groups. Slimen mini-editorial: That's pretty impressive. These folks want to compete on bicycles or they wouldn't show for this torture test. Incentives should be developed and communication established with these folks to pull them into other local racing events. What a resource! For further results from the Kansas City Corporate Challenge go to: "Big Results" Truth (Updated 6/4) Saturday, June 1st was the opening event of the Chilli's Series, a 20K Time Trial. Rumor has it that one of the faster times was turned by a racer in flip-flops. Folks were using this event as a tune up for the State Time Trials. Sunday June 2nd was a double dose of the Devil's Backbone. For results and pics of the weekends racing go to: "Alta-Sport" Twilite Criterium Results Here's the link to the first evening under the lights. Jim Whittaker reports a good kid's turnout. See the flyer page and this link for more info: "Weekly Mountain" The Great Dane and Other Quick Stories This just in 5/25: Brian Jensen of BRBC, in his first Pro/1/2 road race, took a close second place at the Burlington Road Race. The likes of Posties, Jelly Bellys, Mercurys and Prime Alliances were present. Racing continues this weekend in the Quad Cities. New flyers are available for River Trail mountain bike racing and more of Jim Whittaker's fine events. See the flyer section. Joe Martin Michelle Jensen sends these observations from last weekend's Arkansas Stage Race. Full results should appear at www.arkansasracing.com "Road Trip" Another Two for the Road Local cyclists/triathletes Phil Gronniger and Juli Watkins traveled to St. Croix to compete in a triathlon May 5. Phil competed in the half Ironman distance (his first) while Juli took it easy and competed in the sprint distance. Juli won her race and was interviewed by OLN (race will be broadcast on OLN May 29th at 9:30 p.m. CST) but Phil didn't fare so well. After surviving the rough waters (3-5 foot swells and 30 mph winds), Phil blasted out onto the bike course, but a tight turn, a rainshower and perhaps a little overzealousness contributed to a crash that left Phil bruised and his bike broken (broken front wheel and two flats). The thought crosses your mind, "How did a Cat 1 cyclist crash in a triathlon?" but clever Phil created a diversion so no one would ask that question... He proposed to Juli on the beach last Wednesday, and she said yes! No date yet, but the giddy couple was seen flashing the ring at the Tuesday night crit... Kansas State Championships It appears after some lengthy debate that dates for the 2002 Kansas USCF Championship races are finalized. The Slimen newsdesk has been informed that St. Mary's on June 9th will be the Time Trial. Olsburg on June 23rd will host the Road Race. Worden for the Team Time Trial on July 13th. Topeka on July 21st for the Criterium. December 8th will round things out with the Cyclocross championship, location to be determined soon. Watch this space for official race flyers. Wichita Racing The folks of River City Racing have a fine website AND results from this weekend's classic festival events are up. Check out the archives for information on things happening south of the metro. "RCRC website" Here's a report from hard working race director Bret Sehorn "Results" Maxine's Fine Foods For the last ten years or so an ever changing group of cyclists have converged on this east Kansas City restaraunt. The grits and pancakes were fuel for many an epic ride/adventure. Riders of all persuasions, from Pro license holders to absolute beginners, were entertained and trained with breakfast, conversation, and a variety of road surface. Sadly, last Tuesday was the final day of business for this traditional stop. A good friend has forwarded this euology: "Maxine's" May KCBC Time Trial Pleasantly cool temps and light crosswinds made this race against the clock a more tolerable experience. A larger turnout was due in part to Sprint using the event as a Kansas City Corporate Challenge qualifier."Results" More Results/Events 5/2/02 The full results from the Jesse Blancarte Time Trial have just hit the newsdesk. Stay tuned."Time Trial Results" Track Style This from Jim Whittaker, "Get ready for Thursday night May 30th 7:45pm at Haskell Indian College. The Twilight Crit Series, race 3 to 5 times a night with different "track" style races. Win-n-out, miss-n-out (last rider every lap is pulled).
There are two categories, Cat A and Cat B. A's are 1/2/3/4, and B's are 4/5.
This is a great chance for new cyclists to race many times in one evening. It's a smooth .5
mile circuit with lights all around. A's and B's will alternate races up
to 9:30 or 9:45pm. Beat the heat too." Jim and others are also discussing a Kansas State Team Time Trial Championship. Star Signs Results Lots of close competition in this three stage, two day event. Check out Kris Tilford's placing in TWO categories. In an effort no doubt inspired by brother Steve's Iron Otter win, Kris raced each stage twice."Results" Heartland Race Number Two The venue for this weekend's racing, Snow Creek, has been groomed and improved since last Fall's 24 hour race. Several hundred moutain bike racers from across the country are expected to converge. A huge prize list, outstanding courses, and party atmosphere are much of the attraction. Good spectating and kids races are bonus. Heartland Promotions and title sponsor Bikesource, put their hearts into this event. For more info go to "Heartand" Amelia Earhart Criterium The weekend road events were rounded off with this fine Atchison event. Josh Crowe forwarded these unoffical results: "Results" Fun In The Mud This from Chris Locke (and we feel it says it all), "37 racers braved 3 inches of rain, mud, and basically terrible conditions to complete the 1st annual God's Country Off-Road Duathlon. Damzan Almanza edged out Dan Fuhrmann & Chris Locke to win the overall. Glenda Taylor smoked the women's field to take the title. Taylor easily beat women that were half her age. Agegroup winners included: Dan Fuhrmann, Chris Locke, Nicholas Power, Michelle Hubbard. The fastest time of the day was turned in by the male relay team of Gerard Arantowicz & Mike Goodwin.""Results" and for more info on other fine multisport events go to: Perry-Roubaix Road Race Here's the results from the Saturday portion of a full Kansas weekend of racing. Man O Man, does it change the tempo going from rough gravel to fast pavement! Plenty of flats, for sure, but the follow cars were there to service those in need. For those of you who missed out, the course dropped down the big Perry hill (that has seen so much suffering going up), then right hand at speed and onto the gravel. Three miles of hell, a little smooth dirt, but mostly small rock. Some real chunky stuff in the corners, a sketchy bridge, then onto the tarmac. Exposure to wind and some good twisty stuff on the pavement, topped off with a wall to the finish. Jim Whittaker orchestrated a a very fresh event that fostered some serious competition. Below are some photos that capture some of the fun, but you shouda been there. Slimen Mini-Editorial: This reporter suffered and then flatted out but had a damn fine time. I'll be back next year! "Results" "Photos" Joseph Sheehan Road Race Results While those silly Euro-boys were piddling down tractor paths, local roadies were racing from Leavenworth to Atchison. Brendan Sheehan sends the results of this fine event. It should be noted that Pete Greig, winner of the 1/2/3 field is about the same age as Johan Museeuw, but has different color hair."Results" Bunny Bash Results The big loop at Clinton always makes for a great course. "Jed's News" Velodrome for Johnson County As part of a master development plan for the Johnson County Park District, a velodrome facility is in the works. The Slimen news team had a brief interview with a member of the Park Board who indicated the plan is still viable. The issue of a public vote for some of the required funding (for the entire plan) is still not resolved. In addition, some private capital will be needed to "partner" in the project. The voters may see this on the ballot as early as this Fall, but perhaps as late as 2003. Stay tuned for more details. Wichita Training Rides Here's some news regarding training rides near Wichita.
